On the death of Cnut in 1035, his illegitimate son Harald took over as regent of England, as Cnut's legitimate son Harthacnut was away in Denmark. His position strengthened following the murder of Alfred the Aetheling, another claimant to the throne, in 1036, and Harald was recognized as king in 1037.
