I joined the Royal Regiment of Wales at the age of 19 and did most of my infantry training in the Brecon Beacons. Highlights of this time were the celebrated helicopter raid (which went completely wrong) and my narrow escape when rifle bullets were landing at my feet during a live firing exercise. Later on I came back to the regiment as an officer cadet for their exercises in Belgium - this was when I had my unpleasant encounter with a sheep tick.

When I went to university I transferred to the Officer Training Corps and from there to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and finally the Royal Anglian Regiment, where we re-enacted the helicopter raid in Apocalypse Now in Indiana and attacked Gibraltar in rigid raiders.

In revenge for getting covered in dust while I was driving them, these chaps threw me into a pond:

Now that I live in the good old US of A, I'm able to go shooting again.
